The Only Three Northern White Rhinos

Published June 22, 2016
The northern white rhinoceros is probably the most endangered mammal in the world. Only three individuals still exist, all raised in zoos.
The northern white rhinoceros is one of the two subspecies of white rhinoceros (the other one is the southern white rhinoceros). The wild population went extinct sometime around 2009 and left were only individuals on zoos. Four of them were flown to a national park in Kenya in 2009, hoping they would breed. Since then, all remaining rhinos on zoos and one of the rhinos in Kenya have died. The three remaining rhinos are under constant watch by armed guards, to protect them from poachers.

White rhinos are shot and killed for their horns, which are often sold to Asia. There, the horns are grinded to a powder used to make medicin. White rhinocerus horn is thought to cure a number of diseases - of course completely without scientific evidence.
