Smallest Horse In The World - Thumbelina

Updated June 27, 2019
The smallest horse in the world is the dwarf miniature horse Thumbelina - named after the tiny girl in H.C. Andersen's fairy tale.
Thumbelina was born in a farm in St. Louis, Missouri, USA were the owners were breeding American miniature horses. Besides being a miniature, Thumbelina was born with dwarfism, and as a fully grown mare she made it into Guinness World Records as the smallest horse in the world.[1] She measures only 44.5 cm (17.5 in) at the withers.[2][3]
Thumbelina's owners decided not to make money off of her.[3] Instead, she became a therapy horse, spreading joy in children's hospitals. Despite being the smallest horse in the world, Thumbelina has been healthy, and she seems completely unaware of her tiny size.[2] Now 18 years old, Thumbelina lives a quiet life on the farm where she was born.[2]
Thumbelina and her handler Michael Goessling visit a children's hospital in Pittsburgh in 2008.
